Former Premier League referee Mark Clattenburg explains why Tomas Soucek’s goal was disallowed in the first half of the Premier League match between Arsenal and West Ham United. The Hammers took the lead in the 14th minute at the Emirates Stadium thanks to Soucek, who scored from close range.
However, VAR took a long time to check whether the ball had left the pitch before Jarrod Bowen played the Croatian international through. In the end, the goal was disallowed and Clattenburg explained what happened.
Clattenburg told Prime Video, which broadcast the match, “We have to remember that the decision on the pitch is the goal. The assistant referee doesn’t indicate that the ball is out of play, so he has to find clear evidence that the ball is out of play.
“From what I can see from all the replays that VAR is looking at right now, this is the only camera angle that gives a better angle. This ball doesn’t look completely outside.
“So I wouldn’t be surprised if they conceded a goal.” And sure enough, the goal stood and West Ham went into the break with a 1-0 lead.
