Aaron Ramsdale may have played poorly for Arsenal against Brentford today in the opening 45 minutes, but he saved himself at the end.

Ramsdale had a nightmare when Yoann Wissa equalised for the Bees just before the end of the half and it looked like it would be a costly mistake as Brentford dug deep, but Ramsdale made a couple of important saves – particularly Ivan Toney’s long-range shot – and a late goal from Kai Havertz secured the three points for the Gunners.

Former Arsenal defender Martin Keown said of Ramsdale’s contribution to the game that he could now be considered a hero rather than a villain.

“Fortunately, we are now talking about Ramsdale perhaps being a hero because of the two fantastic defensive goals he scored. Havertz, a really important goal. You can see the relief on Ramsdale and you can feel it in the stadium. This is an important victory for Arsenal,” said Keown.

Ramsdale was embraced by his team-mates at the end of the game, a clear moment of support for the £30 million goalkeeper.

Ramsdale will surely give Kai Havertz a beer tonight. Or whatever he chooses to drink.

If Arsenal had drawn this match, the story and pressure surrounding the former Sheffield United player would have been immense.

Ramsdale, according to Keown, made some important saves at the end that helped Arsenal to victory.

But he has Ben White and others to thank for the 2-1 victory and for relieving the pressure.

If this was Ramsdale’s last game at the Emirates, he will remember it and at least tell his children about it.

For Arsenal in general, it seemed to be a big night and an important moment in the title race.
