Arsenal midfielder Ethan Nwaneri “won’t be thrust into the side” for the game against Tottenham this weekend, according to GiveMeSport.
The website claims that is unlikely that the teenager will be handed a start in the derby, despite speculation that he could be brought into the team.
Manager Mikel Arteta has been left with a selection headache following the news that captain Martin Odegaard has picked up an ankle injury on international duty.
Mikel Merino (shoulder) and Declan Rice (suspension) were already unavailable for the fixture, while Fabio Vieira was sent out on loan to Porto earlier this summer.
From the sound of things, it doesn’t look like Nwaneri will be in the starting lineup on Sunday but he is expected to make the bench.
Who will start against Spurs?
GiveMeSport report that Arteta is giving serious consideration to starting Raheem Sterling through the middle. The 29-year-old arrived from Chelsea on loan just before the transfer window closed last month.
The England international has yet to make his debut so it would be a big game to put him in from the start, but Arteta clearly has faith in his abilities.
Were Sterling to be given the nod, it is believed that Kai Havertz would drop back into the No.10 role vacated by the injured Odegaard.
Arsenal do have alternatives they can consider
Rather than playing Sterling up front, Arteta could instead deploy him off the left flank and play Leandro Trossard behind Havertz, but it is not a position the Belgian has played much for the Gunners.
Alternatively, with Gabriel Jesus expected to be available for the derby, the Brazilian could be handed the responsibility, although it has to be pointed out that he does lack match fitness, having not featured since the opening-day win against Wolves due to a groin problem.
