James Trafford gives Newcastle transfer green light but still have two obstacles to overcome
The Magpies have opened talks with James Trafford ahead of a summer move as keeper indicates to sources close to him he’d like to make switch to Newcastle
Newcastle United transfer target James Trafford has indicated he is ready to make the move to St James’ Park – and the deal is now down to whether the Magpies can agree a fee with Burnley.
A price of £34million has been mooted by Burnley chiefs after Newcastle bid just over £15m last summer. That was swiftly rejected but it is believed that Newcastle could have had that deal tied up last summer had they pushed a little further.
Unfortunately, Newcastle could not bid much higher given their PSR issues and the deal was left parked leaving Trafford to help lead Burnley’s charge to promotion.
Personal terms, with talks ongoing between the two clubs, are not said to be a problem for the England international and a wage packet in the region of £100,000 per week will be on the table. The other hurdle to clear will be convincing Nick Pope and Trafford that the pair’s presence can work in Newcastle’s squad.
Trafford has previously told sources close to him that he would only leave Turf Moor to be a No 1. But at 22, the 6ft 6in stopper may yet be persuaded that he would be the future at Newcastle while Pope plays the majority of Premier League games.
That would leave European nights and cup games as a possibility for Trafford to shine. As things stand, Trafford has been on England duty for the World Cup qualifier against Andorra and tonight’s friendly against Senegal but things could move in due course.
