Former Derby County striker Jack Stretton has secured a move to National League Morecambe and immediately set his sights on promotion.

Stretton has joined the Shrimpers as a free agent after leaving Burton Albion at the end of a frustrating season in which he played 14 games.

The 23-year-old enjoyed loan spells at Woking and Oldham before moving to the Brewers after deciding to cut ties with League One outfit Stockport in January.

But now he has the chance of a fresh start with the Shrimpers as they target an instant return to League Two after being relegated.

Stretton said: “On a personal level it’s to get regular games for myself and obviously show people what I can do, score goals and just help the team in any way I can to achieve hopefully what everyone wants – promotion.”

After securing his first arrival of the summer, Morecambe boss Derek Adams added: “Delighted to welcome Jack to the football club

“He’s been a renowned goal scorer at youth level and we’re hoping to bring out the potential that he’s shown over the years working with the players and staff at Morecambe football club.”

Stretton came through the ranks at Derby and made his debut under Wayne Rooney in November 2020. He bagged his first professional goal against Peterborough in 2021 before leaving for loan spells at Stockport and Carlisle.

He eventually left the club to seal a permanent switch to Stockport in January 2023 but could not nail down a regular first-team place after sealing his return to Edgeley Park.

Burton then took him on a short-term deal as they were able to survive relegation from League One, but he was released at the end of the campaign.
