“They paid far too much” – Pundit blames Sunderland for €30.5m midfielder who is not good enough for top flight football

Borussia Dortmund paid far too much for Jobe Bellingham this summer and Sunderland sold him above his worth.

That’s according to Didi Hamann, via BILD, who believes Dortmund paid over the odds to secure Bellingham this summer.

The midfielder joined Dortmund in a €30.5m deal from Sunderland early in the summer transfer window after something of a European, or at least German, battle for his signature.

Several clubs had wanted to sign him, but he eventually headed to Dortmund, following in the footsteps of his older brother in the process.

There was plenty of excitement at the German club about his arrival but that has quickly turned into something else after the midfielder started the season slowly.

Bellingham’s role, ability and price tag have become a hot topic at the club, particularly after his father Mark stormed onto the pitch after the recent 3-3 draw with St. Pauli to criticise his son’s early substitution in that game to sporting director Sebastien Kehl.

That matter has been resolved internally but has put Bellingham under increased pressure and focus to perform up to the standards expected of a €30.5m signing. Hamann, though, believes that a price Sunderland did well to bring in.

“I spoke to people in Great Britain, and they said they paid far too much money for him,” he said when asked about the midfielder.

BILD then add that there is talk of Bellingham’s price being driven up by Eintracht Frankfurt, who flew him in to Germany for talks. Sunderland, of course, won’t care one bit, but it’s been a rough start for their former man, and his transfer fee is now being questioned by many.
