Arsenal have reportedly reached an ‘agreement’ over a deal to sign Real Sociedad star Mikel Merino this summer, as per Football Transfers.

After securing the Riccardo Calafiori deal, the Gunners are said to be planning to reinforce their engine room in this transfer window. They were linked with numerous names but the Spaniard has started to emerge as the primary target in recent times.

According to the report by Football Transfers, after opening talks with the player’s representatives, the North London club have reached an ‘agreement’ over the personal terms with the midfielder.

The report further claims that Arsenal haven’t submitted a formal proposal to Real Sociedad yet but they could opt to do that over the coming days.

Merino has entered the final year of his current contract and is unlikely to sign an extension with La Real. Therefore, Mikel Arteta’s side can manage to secure his signature in a cut-price deal this summer with the Basque club reportedly wanting a fee of around £25m.

It has been reported that Atletico Madrid and Barcelona are also keen on signing him but Arsenal have seemingly placed themselves in an advantageous position in this race after agreeing on personal terms with him.

The 28-year-old is a technically gifted player and has the ability to play threading passes between the lines. Additionally, he can receive passes under pressure and also works extremely hard without possession.

The Spaniard, standing at 6ft 2in tall, is dynamic, strong, excellent in the air, and also has the tendency to chip-in with some important goals. So, he possesses the necessary qualities to flourish in the Premier League.

Having previously played for Newcastle United, he already has the Premier League experience. In addition, he has showcased his qualities in a top league like La Liga therefore, he would be an excellent acquisition for the North London club if they purchase him.

However, it is going to be interesting to see whether the Gunners eventually manage to secure his signature if he leaves Real Sociedad in this transfer window.

Meanwhile, after narrowly missing out on winning the league title in back-to-back seasons, Arteta has said that he is desperate to win the Premier League so it remains to be seen whether he can finally guide Arsenal to achieve that next season.
