Wolverhampton Wanderers manager Vitor Pereira has strongly criticised Sunderland FC supporters, branding them “the worst fans ever in Premier League history” following an ugly incident during Wolves’ visit to the Stadium of Light.
The fiery comments came after a Wolves player was allegedly shouted at and verbally abused by a section of home supporters during the second half of the match. Pereira, visibly furious in his post-match interview, did not hold back in his assessment of what he described as “disgraceful behaviour” from the stands.s
“What happened today was shameful,” Pereira said. “No player deserves to be shouted at like that. Respect is a basic value in football — and what we saw from some Sunderland fans was the opposite. It’s embarrassing for their club.”
Reports suggest that stadium officials and match stewards were forced to intervene after the Wolves player appeared visibly upset by the comments from behind the touchline. The Premier League and the FA are expected to review the incident once the referee’s report is submitted.
Pereira went on to emphasise that his team will not be intimidated by such actions:
“My players came here to play football, not to be targets of abuse. I’ve managed in different countries, and I’ve never experienced fans behaving like this. Sunderland should be ashamed — that’s not passion, that’s poison.”
Wolves supporters have since taken to social media to back their manager, demanding an investigation and calling for sanctions against the club involved.
Sunderland FC have yet to issue an official statement regarding the incident, but it is understood that internal discussions are underway to identify those responsible.
